Customer Reviews about Anthony H. Guarino, MD

  • I have been seeing Dr Guarino for several years. He and his staff are extremely caring and devoted to their patients. Yes, many times it is a longer wait, but mostly this is due to their making every effort to relieve your pain while you are there.

Have seen Dr. Guarino in the past. Found him to be a good doctor. HOWEVER, the past couple of years the office staff has become very unprofessional and callous. Last month I saw an orthopedist for a painful hip. Dr. made an xray and told me to see a pain management doctor. I called Dr. Guarino's office and was told I should bring the xray when I come in for my appointment. I returned to the ortho (long round trip) and got the x-ray. After that I called to set my appt. up & was told by Guarino's office that I also needed a HARD COPY of the report from the ortho's office and I'd have to get it in person since I would have to sign for it. AGAIN I returned to ortho's office and was told Guarino's office could have called and had the report faxed. When I called Guarino's office and told them they had given my misinformation about driving back to ortho's office the woman denied she'd ever told me that. FINALLY got an appt. for yesterday and arrived and was told my appt. was two days earlier. THAT WAS ANOTHER LIE. So when I asked when I could set up another appt. I was told the computer was down and they would call me 'later'. I told them goodbye and will not return there.

My overall experience was poor. It started with the one hour wait in the waiting room, without any explanation or apology. The doctor finally saw me at 10:25a.m. for my 9:00a.m. appointment. It was my first visit, so on top of his lateness, I had been encouraged to "arrive early". I believe the reason is that I don't keep them waiting? Unbelievable! I understand going in, that I have a very complex medical history and that I Am being treated for a "relatively new" disease that has no cure. Moreover, my neurologist was suggesting that I be treated in "a University setting", where maybe there are be doctors who specialize in treating someone like me, or maybe have studies ongoing. Dr. Guarino, now already almost 90 minutes behind, seemed curt. He seemed to not have any "special training or experience" in treating my condition, as he kept referring to a similar sounding disorder, which, although similar, has significantly less symptoms than I Am experiencing. The main indication was that he seemed devoid of any empathy for what I Am experiencing. Or maybe he was just too hurried?? He seemed both pompous and condescending when he spoke and asked me questions. He didn't seem to listen to what I was saying, as it appeared that he had a "predetermined" course of action to treat me. He told me to increase a medication that another doctor was prescribing me, and said, "don't worry, so-and-so won't mind me changing the dose, we know each other very well". Not usually a problem except, for someone who 'knows another doctor very well', Dr. Guarino kept mis-pronouncing his name?? Unfortunately Dr. Guarino then prescribed a medication (agent) that he said would work really well. The problem, is that this particular medications is contra-indicated with one of the meds I already take, moreover, I typically have normal, even low blood pressure, however, my pressure spikes with my pain. Consequently, I'm already taking a blood pressure med, which, at time, will leave me tired and dizzy. Since Guarino was already late to my appointment, the whole thing seemed rushed and it made it difficult for me to fully answer a question. I Am not returning to Dr. Guarino for a follow-up, and I left the prescription behind at the desk.
